Skiing in Switzerland is no joke and definitely not for the casual snowboarder who practices every few years. We took the tram followed by the chair lifts followed by the last gondola where the entry sign ominously read “Expert Skiers Only” in order to ascend above the clouds to start our journey with the appropriate view. It was indeed breathtakingly beautiful to be above the majestic Swiss Alps. This is where we (rather I, though it took a group effort to complete the task) started our tumbling sojourn down the 10,000 foot mountain, and this is what I learned:
1) Skiing is way more utilitarian than snowboarding
2) I need to switch to skiing and practice more than once every 5 years
3) Good gear is essential and worth the investment for being able to see through the fog and keep warm
4) Always go with a partner (preferably one on skis who can tow you and your snowboard along the flat bits of the run)
5) Bring snacks in case the 10,000 ft ski run takes a bit longer to complete than you anticipate
It was certainly an experience to remember!
